YouTube chapters help the viewer jump to the right step of an instruction. For them to work like a table of contents, name the result of each segment and check the timestamps in the finished video. A list of nice titles without exact jumps will only make viewing harder.
Build the table of contents after editing
For manual chapters, YouTube requires the first timestamp 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter to be at least ten seconds long. Timestamps with titles are added to the video description; manual chapters replace automatic ones. If the feature is unavailable, the help page suggests checking access to advanced features.
In a conditional two-minute instruction, you can mark 00:00 "What to prepare," 00:25 "Assembling the base," 01:20 "Checking stability." This is a teaching example, not a universal markup. Real boundaries are chosen based on the content of your own file.
Check the start of each step
Open the video as a viewer and click each chapter. The jump should lead to the moment from which the new step is clear, not to the middle of a sentence. Listen to a few seconds before and after the boundary. If the tool is shown before the explanation, the start of the chapter may need to be shifted.
Avoid titles like "Very important" and "Secret": they do not help find a specific answer. Better options are "How to secure the leg" or "What to check before turning it on." Do not add a product to the title that is not in that segment.
If the chapters did not appear
First recheck the format and intervals, then the limitations of the video itself and the availability of the feature. Automatic chapters do not appear on all eligible videos. A manual list of timestamps and a clear description are still useful, but you should not declare interface chapters ready without checking the player.
After trimming or another edit, go through all the jumps again: the old seconds may no longer match the steps. Chapters organize the content, while growth in watch-through and inquiries is checked separately using data, without promising an automatic effect.
Scheme: 1 — divide the instruction into completed steps; 2 — set exact timestamps; 3 — check the jumps in the player.
