Direct visits in Metrica: how to check a lost source

A rise in direct visits in Metrica does not prove that people have started typing the site name manually more often. This source can include visits without a passed referrer or a recognized tag. First check the link path, then discuss the rise in brand awareness.

What is known from the report

Metrica determines the source by tags and data about the previous page. The official help documentation includes in direct traffic not only address entry and bookmarks, but also cases where the transition source was not passed. Therefore, a single Direct line is not enough to distribute people between these scenarios.

A hypothetical author sees a spike after publishing a link in a messenger. They may assume a connection, but they should not rename all direct traffic into that campaign. Other channels could have been active during the same period.

Checking the route

Save the original published URL, the chain of transitions, and the final address. For a new controlled external link, use agreed tags and check whether they are preserved after redirects. Do not add new external UTMs to the site's internal buttons: they solve a different task.

Mark the test visit as a test. Compare it with the expected report, taking into account data processing and the conditions for registering a visit. One successful test confirms a specific path, but does not restore the sources of all past visits.

How to honestly record the conclusion

Separate confirmed data from the unknown: “The new tagged path has been checked; the origin of previous direct visits has not been established.” Do not distribute unknown visits proportionally to known ones without a separate methodology and an explicit estimate label. If brand recognition matters in the report, look for additional signals rather than substituting it with a missing referrer. Correcting future measurement does not turn old uncertain data into precise data.
