Sampling in Metrica: why the report is not built on all data

If Metrica built a report on a sample, its metrics are calculated from part of the data. This is a way to speed up processing of a large volume, not a sign that the remaining visits were deleted. Before using the numbers, check the sampling parameter and record it together with the report conditions.

Find the calculation condition

In Metrica's help, sampling is described for the web interface and the API. It is applied when building a report, without changing the source data. Therefore, the export result and the saved events are different levels of verification.

Look at the selected period, filters, goal, and the value of the "Sampling" parameter. Do not compare two exports only by an identical title. One may have been built with a different precision or over a different time interval.

What to do if you need a more detailed check

Try to increase the sample in a way available for your report. The calculation may take longer, and an overly complex query may fail to be generated. Do not promise that an instant report on all visits is always available for any data.

Another option is to narrow the period to a specific question. For example, instead of the whole season, check the days of a single campaign. But such a result already relates to the selected interval: it cannot be passed off as a full assessment of the season. If you divide the period into parts, take the meaning of the metric into account separately; unique visitors from different intervals cannot be mindlessly added together.

How to record the conclusion

Save the period, goal, segments, sample, and export time. If the value is calculated approximately, indicate this in the working report. Do not turn it into an exact list of paid orders and do not hide the calculation condition for the sake of a convincing presentation.

To verify a specific payment, use the confirmed order record in an available business system. An analytical report helps to study behavior and trends, but does not replace such a register. If there is no source data for reconciliation, keep the conclusion limited to what Metrica actually shows.

A separate task, a small number of real clicks: Zero orders after twenty clicks: what can be concluded from a small test.
