Before preparing a separate Shorts thumbnail, check whether uploading is available for your channel. In YouTube's announcement from 24 July 2026, the rollout began with YouTube Partner Program participants. Expanded access is stated as a plan, so the feature cannot be considered available to every creator.
Two fallback paths
The same announcement describes choosing one of three suggested frames on a computer and choosing a frame from the video in the mobile app. These are different ways of preparing a thumbnail. If there is no upload of your own image, make a suitable frame part of the video itself, without promising the viewer content that is not in the video.
Do not buy access to YPP from an intermediary for the sake of one thumbnail. Check the capabilities in your own official account. The absence of a button does not prove the creator made a mistake: access conditions and rollout may differ.
A layout around one question
The example video shows how to fold a portable tripod. The thumbnail only needs the tripod itself in a clear position and a short indication of the action. A photo of a different model will create a false expectation even with attractive design. Do not put an instruction, a price, a logo, a review, and a call to subscribe into a small image all at once.
Prepare a draft, reduce it to a size similar to a card on a phone, and check whether the object is recognizable. Keep important details closer to the center and separately look at the actual surfaces where the thumbnail is available. Do not assume that one layout displays the same way in all YouTube sections.
How to evaluate a change
Record the date of the replacement and which question was supposed to become clearer. Do not change the title, the topic, and the beginning of the video at the same time if you want to at least descriptively compare the thumbnail's result. Impression sources and audience composition may change on their own; a rise in views after the replacement does not prove a causal effect.
