Before restricting remixes on YouTube, check which videos by others already use your material. Changing the permission may affect existing derivative videos, not just close off the possibility of new remixes.
Permission for audio and video differs
YouTube states that Shorts are available for remixes by default; the author can disable video remixes. The ability to disable both audio and video is described separately for partners with YouTube Studio Content Manager. Do not promise the same toggles to every ordinary channel.
The settings are in the parameters of a specific video in Studio, in the Shorts remixes section. Before saving, read the available options and record the one you selected. The absence of the needed toggle should not be worked around by deleting the source without understanding the consequences.
What will happen to already created remixes
According to YouTube help, restricting or deleting the source may lead to the audio of an audio remix being muted, it being switched to access by link, and subsequent deletion after 30 days. Video remixes are deleted. Some changes to the source video in Studio also affect remixes; before trimming or blurring, reread the terms.
Author's example: a teacher allowed colleagues to use a demonstration of an exercise, and then wants to remove the fragment with the mistake. Before making the change, he compiles a list of known collaborative publications, saves his own source, and tells the partners which fragment is incorrect. He prepares a new correct demonstration separately; he does not make old views proof that the method is correct.
A decision without hasty deletion
If the problem is personal data or rights, do not postpone the necessary restriction for the sake of counters. If it is a small editorial correction, first assess the available ways to clarify and the consequences for derivative works. The decision depends on the reason, not on the general rule that "remixes are always useful."
An allowed remix does not mean that it can be downloaded and freely used on another platform. And conversely, ordering views does not give additional rights to the source material.
