Before a major edit of a Telegram channel, save a readable archive and separately verify what actually made it in. The export helps you find the previous wording or the original photo. It does not promise to restore a deleted channel, subscribers, and previous post addresses with a single button.
What to keep before changes
Make a list of the materials you plan to change: for example, the price list, booking terms, and five posts with examples of work. Next to them, write down the links and the date of the last check. For each item, decide whether only the text is needed or also photos, videos, and documents. Do not export customers' private conversations for the sake of archiving a public channel.
Telegram describes export via the Desktop app: a general data export and an export of an individual chat's history are available, in HTML and JSON formats. The names of the menu items depend on the app version. The official publication about the feature is dated 2018; this is not a new capability from September 2026. Check the export available in your installed version before you start deleting.
Verification using a workshop as an example
An author's example: a workshop is changing its delivery terms. The person responsible saves the channel history with the necessary attachments into a separate folder with the date, then opens the HTML locally. They find the old post by the words "city delivery," open the attached price list, and check several photos. If only a link is visible instead of the file, or part of the period is missing, the archive is not yet accepted.
For an editorial log, a single line is enough: "delivery post — text found — attachment opens — copy saved — can be edited." JSON is convenient for subsequent machine parsing; HTML is for reading without special software. Choose the format based on the actual task, not on the size of the resulting file.
After the export
Restrict access to the folder if it contains non-public information. Save a second copy in a controlled location and write down who is responsible for updating it. After editing, check the live post in the channel: having an archive does not prove that the new price or link was published correctly.
