Where Spotify plays come from: search, profile, and playlists

How to combine Spotify statistics with transitions from ads and why an in-app source does not reveal the listener's entire path.

You posted an announcement on Telegram, a listener saw it in the evening, and in the morning found the song on Spotify by its title. The ad report may show no click. Spotify statistics will show a play, but the announcement itself will not necessarily be listed there. These data describe different parts of the path.

Start with what Spotify itself shows

In the Source of streams report, Spotify separates the places where music is started: the artist's profile and catalog, listeners' libraries and playlists, editorial and algorithmic playlists. There is also a division into active and programmed sources. Description of the report.

This is not a list of sites from which people came. The label about the artist's profile does not say which Telegram channel or ad video brought the visitor. And the name of the commercial service "from search" does not mean that the dashboard has a separate line of the same name by which the entire order can be verified.

When opening the report, first fix the object: a single song or the artist as a whole. Then record the period. Otherwise it is easy to explain the growth of one release by changes in the overall catalog, even though part of the plays went to an old song.

Measure external sources on your own page

For each placement, use a separate tagged link to the release page if you manage its analytics. Then you can compare visits and transitions to music platforms. If you lead directly to Spotify, your own site will not see these visitors.

Create a small log: date, platform, material, link, expenses, and observed result. For example: "On Tuesday an interview was published, link in the description; on Wednesday a vertical clip was posted." When the graph changes, you will have a sequence of events rather than a guess from memory.

The number of outgoing clicks from the page and the number of Spotify plays do not have to match. A person may change their mind, open the app later, or listen to the song several times. Without linking data at the level of a specific action, one cannot claim that every click became a stream.

What can be learned about search

Spotify states that search results take into account the user's listening history and popularity metrics. Consequently, your own search screen is not the same results for all listeners. Spotify search help.

A practical check is simpler than trying to guess the formula: whether the spelling of the artist's name in the announcement and on the platform matches, whether it is confused with another performer, whether the direct link leads to the desired version of the song. If a problem is found in the metadata, resolve it with the distributor.

How to explain growth without stretching the facts

A hypothetical example: after an interview, visits to the release page and plays from the profile increased. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the interview helped. But at the same time a new post could have come out or another source could have had an effect. For the next check, separate the placements in time and save the links so that the explanation becomes more precise.

Guaranteed paid streams contradict Spotify's rules. Therefore, an increase in the counter cannot be used as confirmation of promotion in accordance with the platform's rules or of a promised position in search. Platform rules.

If you are comparing the "plays from search" service, first request a description of the method and the way to verify it. The form shows catalog parameters, but does not guarantee ranking. Check the specified mode: completing a demo form does not confirm a real order.

✦ Choose a quantity and place an order →

In your working report, leave a separate line for "unknown." It is more honest than attributing all new streams to the last published post.
