By allowing a SoundCloud track to be downloaded, you give the listener a copy of the uploaded source file. This is a different action from listening on the site or saving for offline playback within the app. First decide whether this file is really ready to be handed over.
Checking the source
Open the file outside SoundCloud: make sure it is the final version, without an intro for internal use and without unwanted metadata. Check which rights allow you to distribute the materials it contains. Having your own account does not confirm permission to hand out someone else's recording.
A hypothetical musician wants to give a promo version to the press, but uploaded a working master with a different ending. Enabling downloads does not automatically create a separate promo file. First prepare an acceptable version and determine the circle of recipients.
Setup and test
In the editor for a specific SoundCloud track, SoundCloud describes the Permissions tab and Enable Downloads. After saving, check the action through the web interface from a logged-in listener account. Anonymous downloads are not supported. The help section separately notes downloading individual tracks, not a whole playlist; limits depend on the account's terms.
Compare the downloaded copy with the expected source. If the person does not see the button, do not send them to a third-party downloader: first check the login, the track's permission, the web version, and the current restrictions.
What does not change after disabling
Disabling further distribution does not revoke files already received. So do not use public downloading as a temporary safe way to hand over a private demo. For collaboration, agree on access and transfer rules in advance. An allowed download by itself does not mean permission to use the recording in someone else's advertising; the terms of use of the material must be described separately.
