New visitor or new buyer: two different reports

A "new visitor" in web analytics is not necessarily a new buyer. The browser, device, and stored identifiers affect visit recognition, while a first purchase is determined by the history of confirmed orders. To evaluate repeat sales, you need two separate reports.

A "new visitor" in web analytics is not necessarily a new buyer. The browser, device, and stored identifiers affect visit recognition, while a first purchase is determined by the history of confirmed orders. To evaluate repeat sales, you need two separate reports.

What the counter sees

The metric describes ordinary visitors through anonymous browser identifiers in cookies. After cookies are deleted, the same person may be counted as new. A cross-device visitor is a separate concept that accounts for the merging of browsers; do not mix these metrics within a single comparison.

Therefore, growth in the share of new visitors does not yet prove an influx of buyers who are learning about the brand for the first time. A person may have changed phones, and a regular customer may have opened the link in a different browser. These are measurement limitations, not grounds to consider the entire report useless.

An example of two stories

A hypothetical female customer ordered a notebook from a laptop, then a month later opened an announcement from a new phone and bought a second one. In the analytics report, the phone may look like a new visitor. In a correctly linked order history, this is a repeat purchase.

Another visitor reads articles for a month from one browser and pays for an order for the first time today. For the counter, they are returning, but for sales, they are a new buyer. These two examples show why you cannot rename a web analytics column into a customer base column.

How to keep the report

In one block, keep visit and visitor metrics with the specified recognition system. In the second, count first and repeat confirmed purchases using your designated customer identifier. Do not merge different accounts based on a guess, and do not collect unnecessary personal data for the sake of a nice number.

If a visit cannot be reliably linked to a purchase, keep the match as unknown. Separately note changes to analytics settings and consent coverage: they can change the composition of the observed audience. The decision to make a repeat offer to customers should be based on a verified order history, not only on the "returning" label in the browser report.
