Shazam Count shows recognitions of a track, not the number of Apple Music listens. To understand a spike, first select a specific version of the song, a period, and a territory. Do not convert recognitions into fans or sales using an invented coefficient.
Comparable metrics
Apple Music for Artists shows Plays, listeners, and Shazam Count separately. According to Apple's help, a recognition of a similar fragment of the original and a remix may be attributed to the version the system considered the best match. Therefore, a difference between versions does not always mean separate independent audiences.
An illustrative example: the report showed 120 recognitions and 40 listens. From this one cannot conclude that exactly a third of those who recognized it went on to listen: these are aggregates of different actions, not a linked path of the same people. First establish the periods and boundaries of each metric.
Spike check log
Record the version name, dates, city or country, and the observed value. Next to it, separately note known events: a broadcast, a concert, a clip being posted. A coincidence in time is a hypothesis of a connection, not confirmation of the source.
Apple warns about different systems and schedules for processing Shazam data and artist dashboard data. If there is a discrepancy, do not draw a conclusion from two screens captured at different moments. Save the time of the check and repeat the comparison after the data updates; do not add up the same metric from two interfaces.
Practical action
Check that the recognized track leads to the correct artist and an available release. If interest is noticeable in a particular territory, you can prepare suitable release information for that audience. Planning expenses based only on a spike in recognitions is premature: this metric contains no confirmed purchases or reasons for the interest.
Outline: 1 — select the release and period; 2 — check recognitions separately from listens; 3 — formulate a testable hypothesis of interest.
